Oliver, a regular kid from South Carolina has a rather unusual Father. Well, unusual anywhere outside the borders of the southern United States. Oliver's dad is a radical televangelist with a saviour complex and an insatiable thirst for money. Oliver lives in his shadow, constantly being harassed for not being masculine enough.

One sultry, summer's day Dad plucks a regular woman from her sinful life and quickly marries her. This is the first time a woman has been in the house since Oliver's mom left. Step Mom's brazen femininity awakens something in Oliver. After this revelation, Oliver comes out to Step Mom as Olivia. Step Mom playfully indulges Olivia's passion for dresses, heels and pearls in secret, aware of the danger surrounding them.

Over time Olivia becomes increasingly uncomfortable in her skin, dress up is not enough anymore. Olivia finds her safe space in solitude in the library where she goes to read novels in peace and quiet, she feels comfortable enough here to wear a skirt in public and reveal her true identity. A boy walks in, and takes her for who she is, friendship and flutters of romance blossom.

Back home, the marriage begins to crack as the veil of wealth loses it's initial allure, and Dad reveals his violent true colours. As an act of resistance, Step Mom starts to indignantly embezzle funds from Dad to pay for Olivia's Hormone Replacement Therapy surreptitiously out of love for Olivia. There are many close shaves and Dad becomes increasingly suspicious until one day he finds a skirt in Oliver's bedroom...
